Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins, now holds the title of biggest box office opening for a female-directed film, raking in just over $100 million this past weekend. The previously held record was Lana and Lilly Wachowski for The Matrix Reloaded.
This is notable record, considering women directors helmed just 7 percent of the top 250 grossing films last year and an early summer of dismally performing blockbusters so far. But increasingly, studios that lean on female-led films are finding commercial and critical success, as in the case of Star Wars: Rogue One, or Arrival. So maybe it’s no surprise that Wonder Woman is crucial in continuing to crack the glass ceiling on women-led films.
Patty Jenkins spoke to Screenrant about the importance of getting this female character right:
“I’m a believer in mankind turning stories into about what it means to be a hero and what would I do if I was a hero and how would that feel. And so, you know, there is always that opportunity in any movie with a metaphor to use to make something beautiful that really touches people. And this is such an important time in the world for people to think about what kind of hero they would want to be and what we’re going to do to save this world that I was honored to get to join in the dialogue.”
Wonder Woman is now playing everywhere.
