Sikhs in America face a common misperception that often surfaces at the airport, among other places: people think they’re Muslim. This is often due to the turban that Sikh men wear as a symbol of commitment.

So Hasan Minhaj of The Daily Show tried to help Sikhs out, with a dose of education mixed with humor. Together with Waris Ahluwalia, a Sikh-American actor, Minhaj brainstormed ways to counter the doubly misguided Islamophobia directed against Sikhs.

“Here’s all Americans care about other religions,” Minhaj, who is Muslim, told Ahluwalia. “Number one: Do you drink beer? Number two: Do you eat pork? Number three: Will you blow s— up?”

“I eat pork. I love bacon,” Ahluwalia said.

“That’s great!” Minhaj replied.

“Why don’t you just go, ‘Hey, I’m not Muslim’?” Minhaj asked a group of Sikhs.

“It’s just not an option for us to throw another community under the bus,” one man said.

“Even if it means things are harder for us, we believe it’s the right thing to do.”
