Christian Peacemakers in the West Bank

Jeff Heie and Cliff Kindy, two of the members of Christian Peacemaker Teams serving in the West Bank, were detained by Israeli authorities for nine-and-a-half hours this past July. Heie and Kindy, who are also friends of Sojourners, were falsely accused of verbally assaulting Israeli soldiers and were badgered with hours of questioning for trying to accompany a truck delivering water to a Palestinian family who had been without it for a week. As Christian Peacemaker Team members, Heie and Kindy felt called by their faith to aid Palestinians in the West Bank who are suffering under Israeli settlement policies that deprive them of their fair share of water.

Since the incident, the Christian Peacemaker Team in Hebron has received numerous death threats. In response, they have issued a statement calling for "a rejection of the use of violence in the settlement of all disputes including punishment of anyone who would be responsible for casualties to members of the Christian Peacemaker Team itself."
