The War Resisters League, a 75-year-old pacifist organization, is launching a new campaign to help people realize what it would be possible to accomplish in their communities if the budget for the military were abolished altogether.
The League, which supports the abolition of the military around the world, notes that even with the end of the Cold War, the U.S. military budget is still more than seven times the combined military budgets of all those nations currently considered enemies. "A Day Without the Pentagon," which will be observed on October 24, is meant to show people how much of their tax dollars actually go to the Pentagon and how this money might be more productively applied to deal with issues such as homelessness, education, unemployment, and disease. Chris Ney of the War Resisters League says the campaign "is asking local community members to make the links between the consumption of the Pentagon and the unmet local needs."
