Voice of the Day: Martin Luther King Jr.

by the Web Editors 08-07-2013

Voice of the Day: Jeanne Jugan

Go and find Jesus when your patience and strength give out and you feel alone and helpless. He is waiting for you. Say to him, 'Jesus, you know exactly what is going on. You are all I have, and you know all. Come to my help.' And then go and don't worry about how you are going to manage. That you have told God about it is enough. He has a good memory. - Jeanne Jugan + Sign up to receive our quote of the day via e-mail

Voice of the Day: A Community Development Proverb

by the Web Editors 08-05-2013
Go to the people. Live among them. Learn from them. Love them. Start with what they know. Build on what they have. But of the best leaders, when their task is accomplished, when their work is done ... the people will remark: 'We have done it ourselves.' - often quoted by John Perkins Proverb + Sign up to receive our quote of the day via e-mail

Afghanistan's Children of War

by the Web Editors 08-02-2013

The United Nations issued a report on Wednesday stating that the number of civilians killed or wounded in Afghanistan rose by 23 percent in the first six months of 2013, with women and children faring the worst — killed by roadside bombs almost every day. An earlier UN report noted that

"Afghanistan remains one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a child."

Over a third of Afghans are living in abject poverty, violence is escalating as NATO forces withdraw, and years of international aid has done little to decrease the abuse of women and children.

Verse of the Day: The Wilderness

by the Web Editors 08-02-2013
And the Spirit immediately drove [Jesus] out into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness for forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him. - Mark 1:12-13 + Sign up to receive our social justice verse of the day via e-mail

Voice of the Day: Parker Palmer

The power of a fully lived life or a truly learned mind is not a power to be sought or contrived. It comes only as we let go of what we possess and find ourselves possessed by a truth greater than oru own. - Parker Palmer + Sign up to receive our quote of the day via e-mail

Prayer of the Day: 8/2/13

by the Web Editors 08-02-2013
God our provider, all good gifts come from you. Make us so thankful for your gifts that we cannot help but share them with others. Own us as your fools as we abandon the stuff of this world for the treasures of your kingdom. Amen.

Prayer of the Day: 8/1/13

by the Web Editors 08-01-2013
May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be always acceptable to you, o Lord, my strength and my redeemer.  - Psalm 19:14

Verse of the Day: 'May You Be Made Strong'

by the Web Editors 08-01-2013
May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from [God’s] glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully giving thanks to [God], who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. - Colossians 1:11-12 + Sign up to receive our social justice verse of the day via e-mail

Voice of the Day: Augustine

by the Web Editors 08-01-2013
In affliction, then, we do not know what it is right to pray for. Because affliction is difficult, troublesome, and against the grain for us, weak as we are, we do what every human would do. We pray that it may be taken away from us. However, if he does not take it away, we must not imagine that he has forgotten us. In this way, power shines forth more perfectly in weakness. - Augustine + Sign up to receive our quote of the day via e-mail

Voice of the Day: Frederick Buechner

by the Web Editors 07-31-2013
The grace of God means something like: Here is your life. You might never have been, but you are because the party wouldn't have been complete without you. Here is the world. Beautiful and terrible things will happen. Don't be afraid. I am with you. Nothing can ever separate us. It's for you I created the universe. I love you. There's only one catch. Like any other gift, the gift of grace can be yours only if you'll reach out and take it. Maybe being able to reach out and take it is a gift too. - Frederick Buechner + Sign up to receive our quote of the day via e-mail

Prayer of the Day: 7/31/13

by the Web Editors 07-31-2013
Jesus, it is enough to tell others of your works of mercy, of your resurrection, of your imminent return. It is enough to praise you in the sanctuary, to kneel before you, to wait in silence for you. Lord, it is enough to be named as one of your children, to be bound in eternal love and freedom to give up our lives for you. Amen. - Common Prayer

Verse of the Day: Without Love

by the Web Editors 07-31-2013
If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. - 1 Corinthians 13:1-3 + Sign up to receive our social justice verse of the day via e-mail

Verse of the Day: 'Rich in Faith'

by the Web Editors 07-29-2013
Listen, my beloved brothers and sisters. Has not God chosen the poor in the world to be rich in faith and to be heirs of the kingdom that [God] has promised to those who love [the Lord]? - James 2:5 + Sign up to receive our social justice verse of the day via e-mail

Voice of the Day: The Letter to Diognetus

by the Web Editors 07-29-2013
Christians live in their own countries, but only as guests and aliens. They take part in everything as citizens and endure everything as aliens. ... They are as poor as begars, and yet they make many rich. They lack everything, and yet they have everything in abundance. They are dishonored, and yet have their glory in this very dishonor. ... They are abused, yet they bless. ... In a word: what the soul is in the body, the Christians are in the world. - Letter to Diognetus + Sign up to receive our quote of the day via e-mail
