On Dec. 19, the Russian ambassador to Turkey Andrei Karlov was assassinated in Ankara, Turkey, reports Reuters. The ambassador was giving a speech at an art gallery when a gunman fatally shot him. Three other people were also wounded and the gunman appears to have been killed.

“Don’t forget Aleppo, don’t forget Syria!” the gunman said after the shooting.

The relationship between Russia and Turkey has been tenuous due in part to the deadly conflict in Syria. Turkey has taken a stance against the regime of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, while Russia has deployed troops and its air force to support Assad’s regime. Those forces have been attempting to gain control of the eastern part of Aleppo, causing a crisis with civilians fleeing Aleppo in search of refuge.

The U.S. State Department has condemned the shooting of Karlov. The department has been in discussion with Russia about the refugee crisis of Aleppo, in an attempt to alleviate the increasingly dire situation.
