Tuesday, we traveled to New York City, where authors normally spend more time than in Detroit. Of course, there were more interviews and book conversations on the phone, which will be a staple of my life for the next several weeks. But probably the most interesting interview on the first day was the "Ron Reagan Show." Yep, that's Ronald Reagan's son, and he has a very successful evening talk show on Air America -- not the place one would expect a Reagan to be. But Ron has a different perspective on a lot of things than Ronald did, even though I'm sure they also agreed on many things.
I listened to the show for a while before I went on, and found him to be very insightful, thoughtful, and more balanced than some of his callers from both the left and the right. Ron Reagan was concerned about the nation's panicked reaction to the latest terrorist attempts and failed intelligence efforts. He thought the challenge to examine our values in this Great Recession and ask what a moral recovery might look like is a deeper issue than the latest story on airport security. You can listen to our good conversation.
A good and moderately priced dinner at a local Italian restaurant ended the day as I got ready for the rest of the many activities this week in the Big Apple.
