Even before the election was called on Tuesday evening, Stephen Cobert — whose Showtime election night special went very quickly from funny to mournful — gave America a sign-off speech that called for unity.
"Both sides are terrified of the other side," Colbert said, citing Pew Research on the polarized nature of the electorate.
"... How did our politics get so poisonous? I think it's because we overdosed, especially this year. We drank too much of the poison."
Colbert went on to list what Americans can all agree, saying to cheers, "Above all, we, as a nation, should never, ever have another election like this one. Do you agree?"
