British Parliament member John Hume received the International Human Rights Award this spring for his nonviolent reconciliation work in Northern Ireland. Awards were also given to Women in Law and Development in Africa; Elaine Jones, director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund for lifetime achievement; and honorable mention to Roberts B. Owen for his efforts in the Dayton Peace Accords for Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Hume spoke of his dream of a Northern Ireland future in which we will have no killings on our streets and no emigration of young people to other lands to earn a living.
