I DID SO MUCH enjoy reading your series of articles about Henri Nouwen’s untimely (from a human perspective anyway) death. He had become a hero of mine over the past seven years, since I first came across his writing via a quote in our weekly church news sheet. I think I’ve probably read most of his books over the years since. They have been a real bond between me and a close Dutch friend of mine—a lapsed Catholic—who has had more than his fair share of life’s struggles over the past eight years.
Also I was very interested in Mark Walden’s commentary about the Genuine Progress Indicator proposed by the group Redefining Progress ("Counting the Cost," November-December 1996). The need for an indicator such as this has been highlighted by many writers, not least James Garbarino in his recent book, Raising Children in a Socially Toxic Environment.
