The Right Rev. Justin Welby, bishop of Durham in the U.K., has been named the new Archbishop of Canterbury, succeeding the retiring Archbishop Rowan Williams as head of the Anglican Communion.

The Very Reverend Gary Hall, dean of Washington National Cathedral, released the following statement about Welby's appointment:

“As our churches look for new ways to project their missional identities toward new challenges, we are mindful that no figure so visibly represents the Anglican Communion as the Archbishop of Canterbury. We send our congratulations to Bishop of Durham Justin Welby following his appointment to that time-honored role, welcoming a pragmatic and comprehensive view of the Anglican tradition that allows ample room for dialogue.

“In serving as spiritual home for the nation and an Episcopal church, Washington National Cathedral treasures the rich liturgy, deep faith, and openness to ideas that are its heritage and future. We will continue to seek points of agreement and collaboration that can affirm God’s expansive invitation to all people in the years ahead. Archbishop Welby will be in our prayers as he helps to lead this work on a global scale.”
