This spring 14 undocumented Mexican immigrants died from prolonged exposure to extreme heat in the Arizona desert. Xiomara Castro, California human rights coordinator for Global Exchange, said, "The smugglers didn't kill these men, the desert didn't kill these men, U.S. policy did." An estimated 491 people died crossing the U.S.-Mexican border last year. A memorial vigil, above, was held in San Francisco's Mission District.
