A recent survey of political involvement by black churches, conducted by Morehouse College’s "Public Influences of African-American Churches Project," found that black churches are more likely to be involved with the voting process than with public policy issues. Two-thirds of the 1,900 black churches surveyed indicated that they have assisted with voter registration drives in the last 10 years. Half of the congregations said they organized rides to the polls on Election Day.
On the other hand, less than a quarter of the congregations reported direct involvement with public policy issues in the last 10 years. Less than 10 percent said they frequently lobbied public officials or participated in advocacy organizations.
The Morehouse College project has formed working groups to study how to effectively position black churches within American public life.
