Touched by Peace

Jesuit Father Richard T. McSorley, 88, a retired professor of peace studies at Georgetown University and longtime peace and social justice activist, died October 17, 2002. His opposition to war and war preparation included a long arrest record for street demonstrations, the founding of the Center for Peace Studies at Georgetown, and denouncing the just war theory (which he compared to the "just adultery" theory) as well as military solutions to conflict.

"Anyone who has been involved in the Catholic peace and justice movement in the United States has been touched by the life of Dick McSorley," said Dave Robinson, national coordinator of Pax Christi USA, a Catholic peace group. McSorley's book It's a Sin to Build a Nuclear Weapon won the USA Book Award from Pax Christi in 1991, and he was given the group's "Ambassador of Peace" award the following year.
