Voice of the Day: Rosa Parks

by the Web Editors 02-14-2013
People always say that I didn't give up my seat because I was tired, but that isn't true. No, the only tired I was, was tired of giving in. - Rosa Parks + Sign up to receive our quote of the day via e-mail

Verse of the Day: 'Love the Stranger'

by the Web Editors 02-14-2013
Who executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and who loves the strangers, providing them with food and clothing. You shall also love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt. - Deuteronomy 10:18-19 + Sign up to receive our social justice verse of the day via e-mail

Prayer of the Day: Restraint

by the Web Editors 02-14-2013
God, as we enter into this Lenten season, teach us once again what it means to use restraint and discipline in a culture that typically promotes excess. Strengthen us as we choose to starve ourselves of our little idols in order to join Jesus in the desert, that we might enter once again into the joy of the Lord — the joy of a new life born out of a death to the old life.

Verse of the Day: To Egypt

by the Web Editors 02-13-2013
Now after they had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, ‘Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.’ Then Joseph got up, took the child and his mother by night, and went to Egypt. - Matthew 2:13-14 + Sign up to receive our social justice verse of the day via e-mail

TRANSCRIPT: State of the Union Address 2013

Editor's Note: Below is the full text of the 2013 State of the Union on Feb. 12. For a response to the evening's remarks, see Jim Wallis' column HERE

Fifty-one years ago, John F. Kennedy declared to this chamber that “the Constitution makes us not rivals for power but partners for progress.”  (Applause.) “It is my task,” he said, “to report the State of the Union -- to improve it is the task of us all.”

Tonight, thanks to the grit and determination of the American people, there is much progress to report.  After a decade of grinding war, our brave men and women in uniform are coming home.  (Applause.)  After years of grueling recession, our businesses have created over six million new jobs.  We buy more American cars than we have in five years, and less foreign oil than we have in 20.  (Applause.)  Our housing market is healing, our stock market is rebounding, and consumers, patients, and homeowners enjoy stronger protections than ever before.  (Applause.)

So, together, we have cleared away the rubble of crisis, and we can say with renewed confidence that the State of our Union is stronger.

Violence Against Women Act Passes

by the Web Editors 02-12-2013

The Associated Press reports,

“By a robust bipartisan majority, the Senate voted Tuesday to renew the Violence Against Women Act with new assurances that gays and lesbians, immigrants and Native American women will have equal access to the act's anti-domestic violence programs.

“The 78-22 Senate vote to reauthorize the two-decade-old act that has shielded millions of women from abuse and helped reduce national rates of domestic violence turns the focus to the House, where Republican leaders are working to come up with their own version.”

Differences between the House and Senate were not able to reach a compromise agreement last year, passing two different versions of the Act. The main point of disagreement is over which courts have jurisdiction over cases involving non-native American men accused of violence against native American women on reservations.

Prayer of the Day: Unity

Lord, help us to see that without unity and solidarity very little can be accomplished as we strive for racial harmony and economic justice. As your children, we are in this together. Amen.

Verse of the Day: 'From One Ancestor'

by the Web Editors 02-12-2013
From one ancestor he made all nations to inhabit the whole earth, and he allotted the times of their existence and the boundaries of the places where they would live, so that they would search for God and perhaps grope for him and find him — though indeed he is not far from each one of us. - Acts 17:26-27 + Sign up to receive our social justice verse of the day via e-mail

Verse of the Day: 'When you Reap the Harvest'

by the Web Editors 02-11-2013

by the Web Editors 02-11-2013
The work of salvation, in its full sense, is (1) about whole human beings, not merely souls; (2) about the present, not simply the future; and (3) about what God does through us, not merely what God does in and for us - N.T. Wright + Sign up to receive our quote of the day via e-mail

Prayer of the Day: Stillness

by the Web Editors 02-11-2013

Pope Benedict XVI Announces Resignation

Pope Benedict XVI announced today he will step down on Feb. 28, citing his advanced age. The head of the Catholic Church is 85 years old. Below is the text of his announcement.

Dear Brothers,

I have convoked you to this Consistory, not only for the three canonizations, but also to communicate to you a decision of great importance for the life of the Church. After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry. I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering. However, in today's world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me. For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is.

Dear Brothers, I thank you most sincerely for all the love and work with which you have supported me in my ministry and I ask pardon for all my defects. And now, let us entrust the Holy Church to the care of Our Supreme Pastor, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so that she may assist the Cardinal Fathers with her maternal solicitude, in electing a new Supreme Pontiff. With regard to myself, I wish to also devotedly serve the Holy Church of God in the future through a life dedicated to prayer.

Verse of the Day: Authority

by the Web Editors 02-08-2013
Let every person be subject to the governing authorities; for there is no authority except from God, and those authorities that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists authority resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgement. - Romans 13:1-2 + Sign up to receive our social justice verse of the day via e-mail

Prayer of the Day: Your Kingdom Come

by the Web Editors 02-08-2013
God of glory and grace, we pray that your will would be done and your kingdom come, on earth as it is in heaven. We ask that your Spirit would stir us to live out the gospel--of salvation, of redemption, of justice, of freedom, of Jesus Christ--in spirit and in truth. May we hold fast to you and to your faithfulness. In the name of Jesus, amen.
