Michelle Obama at the DNC on Her Family's Motto: 'When They Go Low, We Go High'

First Lady Michelle Obama addresses the Democratic National Convention.

First Lady Michelle Obama addressed delegates at last night's kickoff to the Democratic National Convention. The evening's theme, "United Together," pushed oneness of the party with much-anticipated speeches from Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders urging Bernie supporters to back Clinton.  But Obama's speech — the only one that seemingly completely silenced the jeers and boos of the Bernie or Bust crowd — focused not just on unity behind Clinton, but unity against the hateful rhetoric coming from the Republican nominee. From the speech:

That is what Barack and I think about every day as he tried to guide and protect our girls from the challenges of this unusual life in the spotlight. How we urged them to ignore those who question their father's citizenship or faith. How we insist that the hateful language they hear from public figures on TV does not represent the true spirit of this country. How we explain that when someone is cruel or acts like a bully, you don't stoop to their level. Our motto is, when they go low, we go high.
