A Rohingya Muslim man’s headless body was found in a river last week, reports The Independent.

This report came soon after he spoke to Myanmar journalists about military presence in the Rohingya settlements. Allegations of rape, torture, and murder often surround the realationship between the military and the Rohignya people in their settlements around Myanmar. Officials have said the victim denied the military’s mistreatment of this Muslim minority group, though a Rohingya leader reported many Muslims were skeptical of the account.

The murdered man spoke to journalists during a rare media tour of the Rakhine state, where most of the Rohingya live. The media was given a government-led tour of the blockaded area. The Rohingya are a Muslim minority group of about 1.3 million living in majority-Buddhist Myanmar. The BBC has referred to the group as one of "the most persecuted minority groups." Although they have lived in the country of Myanmar for generations, the country refuses to see them as citizens. They are often seen as intruders from Bangladesh. Treatment of the group varies from violent to genocidal, with many, including the Catholic network called Aleteia, claiming that the Myanmar government is practicing a form of ethnic cleansing.

The Rohingya made news in 2015 for atempting to escape the violence in Myanmar by sea. They sailed to countries spanning all of South Asia, but were met with continued violence and lack of access to citizenship and basic human rights. Also in 2015, Pope Francis spoke about the Rohingya people in Vatican City referring to the violence against them as war. “They were chased from one country and from another and from another,” he said. “When they arrived at a port or a beach, they gave them a bit of water or a bit to eat and were there chased out to the sea.”
