The Vatican announced Oct. 6 that Pope Francis would visit Mexico in 2016, reports the Huffington Post.

It has also been confirmed that on the trip, he will go to the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, one of the most visited Catholic sites in the world. In addition, he is expected to go to an area along the U.S. border where immigrants without papers try to make the perilous journey north.

According to the Huffington Post,

Francis has expressed a desire to visit the country in the past and even considered entering the U.S. from Mexico during his September trip in a sign of solidarity with immigrants.

The pontiff touched on issues of immigrations frequently during his trip to the United States in September. When he spoke to Americans from outside of the White House on Sept. 23, the pope said, "As the son of an immigrant family, I am happy to be a guest in this country, which was largely built by such families."

Pope Francis’ only other confirmed trip for 2016 so far is his visit to Krakow, Poland for World Youth Day, though he is also expected to go to Argentina, Uruguay, and Chile.
