The House acted last night with boldness and leadership to pass the DREAM Act. The dream of a young person to go to college or commit themselves to national service should never be illegal. Now, the Senate must act with moral leadership and pass this important legislation. It's not just the right thing to do -- it's good policy.
The DREAM Act will provide a path to citizenship for immigrant youth through earning a college degree or serving in the military. This act is the next step in fixing an immigration system that tears families apart every day. Individuals of faith on both the Left and Right agree that this is neither right nor just.
Many of you now know the story of Bernard Pastor. He exemplifies the best that immigrants bring to our country and the tragedy of our broken immigration system. He was an honors student, record-holding athlete, and active church member who was arrested in mid-November after a minor traffic accident lead police to uncover his undocumented status. Soon, he may be deported to his parents' native country of Guatemala, where he left when he was one year old. If that happens, he would be just one of the 1,100 people who are deported each day.
The Senate is scheduled to take up the DREAM Act today. I urge you to call your Senators today and let them know you support the dreams of Bernard Pastor and so many other young people like him.
