Danger and Opportunity in Zimbabwe

By Nontando Hadebe 10-19-2009

The Chinese symbol for crisis can mean either danger or opportunity. This weekend's announcement by the opposition party in Zimbabwe (MCD) that they will cut off all communication with ZANU (PF) was triggered by the arrest of an MDC minister, but it has long been coming.

This latest crisis could spell danger or opportunity for the country. Seen as an opportunity, this crisis could provide a renewed sense of urgency to implement the unity agreement and ensure that all obstacles are removed. On the other hand, it could spell danger leading to further repression and disregard of the unity agreement.

Whether this crisis will be an opportunity or a crisis will be evident over the next few weeks as the situation unfolds. Continue to pray, thank you.
