The 'Rule' of God

Thanks for “Found in Translation” (by Brian McLaren, March 2006). It was very thought-provoking, and the metaphors are creative and life-giving.

I have one question. Jesus said, “If you love me, you’ll obey my commands.” Now, I’m not legalistic (particularly!), and I don’t want to make life hard for anyone, but it does seem that intrinsic within what God gives us when we get into relationship with God is a clear understanding in grace and love that God is the boss. Kingdom language (although I admit I’m not a big fan) does have that element of God’s authority the other metaphors don’t have. Do we lose a fundamental part of Jesus’ message if we miss out on the “rule” of God that is clearly expressed in kingdom language?
