Frank Schaeffer at The Huffington Post has some good thoughts on the Obama-Rick Warren furor:
I'm pro-Obama, pro-gay rights. I'm a former once burned, twice shy, ex-evangelical, son of a founder of the Religious Right, now a writer excoriated by the right as a traitor. And Let me tell you why Obama is -- again -- wiser than his critics in picking Warren to pray at the inauguration.
Pastor Adam Hamilton notes Rich Cizik's resignation from the NAE and says:
The right is often characterized by the left as intolerant. Rich's departure is pointed to by the left as another example of this. But the right is not alone in struggling with tolerance. Barack Obama surprised the left by asking Pastor Rick Warren to offer the invocation at his inauguration (and civil rights activist Joseph Lowery to offer the benediction). This touched off a firestorm of criticism for his choice because Warren opposes gay marriage.
It is disheartening that while President-elect Obama wants to try and transcend the culture wars, others on both sides seem determined to continue them.
