WASHINGTON, D.C.—Early this morning, President Donald J. Trump announced U.S. military air strikes on Iran—an act of war against a nation of 93 million people. This is morally and religiously indefensible: Trump’s military action circumvents the war powers of Congress, risks enormous financial costs, and most alarmingly, threatens lives.
As Sojourners we condemn these actions and call for a return to respect for territorial sovereignty, adherence to international law, and a path to nuclear disarmament. We demand a cessation of offensive military action against Iran immediately.
Against the advice of his top military advisers, Trump is recklessly endangering lives in what is a clear attempt to destabilize Iranian political leadership and promote regime change in Iran. War does not advance these goals. The people of Iran have courageously stood up to injustice in their own government and must be allowed to exercise their right to self-determination.
These actions are not about nuclear deterrence; the U.S. already launched strikes against Iran in 2025 with stated intent to destroy its nuclear program, and Trump has claimed these strikes were effective in doing so.
As Christians, we follow the Prince of Peace and seek to live as he lived; we take seriously his words in Matthew 5:9: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” Living out these words requires us to proclaim our firm conviction that war is not the answer. Yet Jesus’ words are clear: It is not enough to merely love peace; we are called to actively make peace.
Sojourners stands in solidarity with all those promoting peace in this moment. We call on the U.S. to cease military escalation and instead engage in good faith negotiations around Iran’s nuclear program that would focus on sanctions relief for Iran in exchange for Iran agreeing not to develop nuclear weapons or enrich uranium to weapons grade.
Now is the time to raise our voices to our government through every nonviolent means at our disposal and demand that the United States turn away from this incredibly destructive, dangerous, and immoral path. Countless lives in Iran, the United States, and beyond are at stake.
