Thank you, Jim Wallis (“‘We Were Strangers Once, Too,’” February 2015), for another sensitive editorial. Your reference to Mark’s gospel on caring for the needy is what I have followed carefully. Regarding immigration, Leviticus 19:33-34 states our responsibility clearly: “If a stranger dwells with you in your land, you shall not mistreat him. The stranger who dwells among you shall be to you as one born among you, and you shall love him as yourself; for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.” And more recently, the sign on the Statue of Liberty: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” Members of Congress know neither their Bibles nor American history.
