Among Lodgepole Pines, Between Downpours

A tiny life slips into hiding.
What zips from thicket to thicket survives.
Put down your sack full of ashes.
Bear lightly the heavy cloud.

What zips from thicket to thicket survives.
Do not let this thunder throw you.
Bear lightly the heavy cloud.
Go shadow to shadow, leaving no trace.

Do not let this thunder throw you.
From these aspens, learn trembling.
Go shadow to shadow, leaving no trace.
Cherish the fire you house.

From these aspens, learn trembling.
Tend the flame as blue as lupines.
Cherish the fire you house.
Now, while the storm commits.

Tend the flame as blue as lupines.
Feed it your entire trust.
Now, while the storm commits.
A tiny life slips into hiding.

Marjorie Power was a widely published poet living in Olympia, Washington, and author of Living With It (Wampeter Press, 1983) when this poem appeared.
