Limits of Life and Death

IN HER ARTICLE about Dr. Kevorkian ("Death Becomes Him," November-December), Julie Polter is right when she says, "There is too much mystery inherent in death and life for us to claim any simple answers; there is too much sacred in life and death not to fight for accountability where the two intersect."

We are faced with the complexity of a world where science has enabled us, in so many cases, to prolong existence far beyond what is meant by life.

If Dr. Kevorkian is "steadily pushing the limit on what constitutes 'terminal' or 'untreatable,'" there are all too many other doctors who are so intent on prolonging mere existence that the sacredness of life is jeopardized in that way.
