The Mennonite Central Committee is launching a project to rid northern Laos of unexploded bombs dropped by U.S. planes during the Vietnam war. Lao trainees will learn to locate the thousands of remaining bombs with metal detectors and explode them with dynamite and generators.
Maryknoll announced that, for financial reasons, the Maryknoll School of Theology will close its doors in 1994. The Ossining, New York graduate school specializes in peace and justice education and in preparing students for "cross-cultural ministry."
A document from the U.S. Catholic bishops advocates that nonviolent strategies be addressed "with much greater seriousness in international affairs," and says the bishops "remain skeptical...that modern war in all its savagery can meet the hard tests set by the just war tradition." The document, released in October, is a 10th-anniversary update of the bishops' seminal The Challenge of Peace.
