I am so thankful for Walter Brueggemann’s words about hope in “Vanquishing the Kingdom of Despair” (December 2013). It’s so easy these days to fall into the pit of despair when we look at our personal lives and world filled with murder, rape, environmental degradation, economic manipulations, health tragedies, hunger, and fractured families, among other things. Brueggemann’s description of hope was just what I needed and gave me meat to chew on, rather than platitudes and appetizers that have little nutritional benefit. It’s an article I’m going to cut out and carry with me until the words of hope are written in my heart.
