While many denominations across the globe have opened the door to the ordination of women, none have taken as resolute an action for equality as the Lutheran bishops of Sweden. On October 6, the Church of Sweden ruled that men who oppose the idea of women pastors can no longer be ordained in the church.
The Swedish parliament, which maintains authority over the church, voted in 1958 to allow women pastors, but some male clergy still oppose the idea, according to the Lutheran World Information Service. The bishops' conference ruling this fall will prevent the ordination of any pastor who openly opposes the idea of anyone else becoming a pastor. The bishops said that "every pastor must be willing to work with both men and women pastors."
