Singing Septuaginarians

The Blind Boys of Alabama keep cranking 'em out—now, it's their first Christmas CD ever, titled Go Tell it On the Mountain, a plucky, jovial collection of holiday tunes that should go straight to your gift list. Guests include Tom Waits, Chrissie Hynde, Michael Franti, and Shelby Lynne. A percentage of the CD's royalties will benefit diabetes awareness and research. Real World Records.

Deep (Christian) Thoughts

The newest edition of The Best Christian Writing 2004, edited by John Wilson, brims with rich contemplation and cultural critique. Included among the varied writers and diverse topics within Christendom—a profile of filmmaker Wim Wenders, an essay on being rich, another on repentance—the collection features Sojourners' very own Julie Polter and David Batstone. Jossey-Bass.

Franciscan Nonviolence: Stories, Reflections, Principles, Practices, and Resources, by Ken Butigan, Mary Litell, OSF, and Louie Vitale, OFM. Divided into two parts, this handy resource looks at what the stories of St. Francis and St. Clare of Assisi teach us about active nonviolence. The second half includes resources, such as MLK Jr.'s principles of nonviolence, a sample agenda for a session on violence and transformative nonviolence, and a four-step process for conflict resolution.
