If you’re looking for a pick-me-up, look no further than Cincinatti’s Walk the Moon. The group recently stopped in Washington, D.C., on their world tour and performed in front of an uber-hyped audience.
Their songs blend elements of pop, rock, and dance music — like what you’d expect if you mixed The Strokes, Passion Pit, and sprinkled on some of the overall vibes from the Vans Warped Tour.
The band is definitely young, and it comes out in their tightness as a musical group. Despite some good jams, big energy, and bouncy songs that made most everyone in the audience jump and clap, there were times when coherency was an issue. But these moments were few and far between.
Perhaps the biggest area of growth for the band can be found in their lyrics. While not entirely bad, most of the songs — despite being ridiculously catchy — tend to focus on girls. But they don’t do it in a deeper, contemplative way like, say, Bon Iver. Rather, with lyrics from fan (and personal) favorite “Tightrope,” Walk the Moon blast the listener with more generic anthems that start with a bunch of “Ohs” and barrel into a line like “This heart is burnin’ up.” Again, while not horrible, it has the energy and generality to remind me something I listened to back in the day, like Good Charlotte.
But qualms aside, Walk the Moon are a fun band on the rise with room for growth and, hopefully, the willingness to grow and mature into a band that can build on an already solid foundation.
