Across the country, the Religious Right has showed its strength in a remarkable series of recent victories. In the past few months, the Christian Right has:
- obstructed school curriculum in New York City that opponents called "anti-family" because of its emphasis on teaching "tolerance of diversity";
- won the party endorsement in Minnesota for its candidate over the incumbent Republican governor and helped propel its candidates in Virginia, South Carolina, and Texas to the GOP nomination for the U.S. Senate;
- gained influence (and often dominance) on school boards from La Vista, California, to Northern Virginia, where they've pushed the teaching of creationism and "family values," prayer in the classroom, and against sex education.
- won control of state parties in Oregon, Iowa, Minnesota, Texas, Virginia, Washington, South Carolina, and elsewhere, and have pushed through platform planks supporting the teaching of "creation science" and opposing abortion and "the homosexual lifestyle."
