I’M VERY EXCITED about the two superb cover articles in your July 1994 issue by Rosemary Radford Ruether ("Why I Stay in the Church") and Richard Rohr, O.F.M. ("Holy Fools")! As a Roman Catholic woman religious, I find the present situation in my tradition to be the best and worst of times. Efforts to form just and loving communities in the world coexist with sinful control and domination exercised in God’s name.
Because I am too young to remember a church before Vatican II, I found the writers’ historical understanding, as well as their broad vision and insight into the signs of our times, especially hopeful. Their words are practical and prophetic and appear to spring from two loving critics who are strangers neither to suffering nor to creative fidelity over the long haul. I received their reflections as balm to wound and as substantial food for our communal journey.
