Wangari Maathai, above, coordinator of Kenya’s Greenbelt Movement, was attacked in January with several others as she attempted to plant trees in the Karura forest, near Nairobi. Real estate developers have been targeting the Karura forest, a region located near the international headquarters for the U.N. Environmental Protection Agency. The injured included journalists and several opposition members of parliament.
An ecumenical service of prayers to protect the forest was organized March 21 by the National Council of Churches of Kenya. Maathai is a member of the U.N. Advisory Board on Disarmament and was a presidential candidate last year.
