Regarding the boot marks on Brian McLaren’s backside (“A Bridge Far Enough?” September-October 2005), I would suggest that to be condemned by the right wing for truth-telling is not a sign of having failed in the mission of reconciliation. If memory serves, Jeremiah was killed because he told God’s message precisely as it needed to be told, not because of a lack of empathic presentation. Jesus told us to “Rejoice and be exceedingly glad when people shall revile you and persecute you, and say all manner of evil against you falsely for my sake, for so persecuted they the prophets before you.” Even with the Lord giving him the words, Moses was unable to bring Pharaoh to his senses, or to enable Pharaoh to understand the suffering of the oppressed Hebrew slaves. McLaren’s confessed failure to successfully win over the forces of evil may in fact be evidence that he is doing his job faithfully. Timothy Ray
