Sacred Space

In the 18 months since I trained as a doula, I have become quite aware that, too often, birth loses its sacredness in a hospital setting. The arrival of a new person in the world -- and a mother's surrender to the powerful, divinely designed process of labor -- create sacred space. The authors in your December 2010 issue, particularly Kierra Jackson ("Why I’m Becoming a Doula"), made clear the connection between the miraculous event of birth and our faith in a caring, creative, powerful God.
