Nate Smith-Grasse (he/him) is the art director at Sojourners. He hails from Iowa and is happy to say so, though he’s also proud to have lived in Washington, D.C., for about eight years. Now he lives in small-town Pennsylvania. It’s cool.
Nate got his professional start with a small missions organization in India that makes bags and T-shirts. From there, he took a decade-long detour through various for-profit industries, where he made brochures, logos, T-shirts, signage, motion graphics, videos, packaging, and, once, a rug.
Despite that breadth of experience, Nate still couldn’t tell you exactly what he does—and that’s kind of what he loves about it. Art resists reduction.
But for the sake of this bio, here’s an attempt: Art can lead to changed ideas, feelings, and actions. Nate is grateful to apply that theory with Sojourners’ editorial team, aiming to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.
Outside of work (which is most of life), Nate enjoys spending time with his family, engaging in his Mennonite faith, running, and reading.
