Voice of the Day: Anne Lamott

Most of what we do in worldly life is geared toward our staying dry, looking good, not going under. But in baptism, in lakes and rain and tanks and fonts, you agree to do something that's a little sloppy because at the same time it's also holy, and absurd. It's about surrender, giving in to all those things we can't control; it's a willingness to let go of balance and decorum and get drenched.

Verse of the Day: "The Lord's Steadfast Love"

by Administrator 01-22-2007

A king is not saved by his great army; a warrior is not delivered by his great strength. The war horse is a vain hope for victory, and by its great might it cannot save. Truly the eye of the Lord is on those who fear the Lord, on those who hope in the Lord's steadfast love.

Verse of the Day: Injustice

by Administrator 01-19-2007

The field of the poor may yield much food, but it is swept away through injustice.

Voice of the Day: John Perkins

by Administrator 01-19-2007

The only purpose of the gospel is to reconcile people to God and to each other. A gospel that doesn't reconcile is not a Christian gospel at all. But in America, it seems as if we don't believe that. We don't really believe that the proof of our discipleship is that we love one another (see John 13:35). No, we think the proof is in numbers ... Even if our "converts" continue to hate each other, even if they will not worship with their brothers and sisters [...]

Verse of the Day: Praise the Lord

by Administrator 01-18-2007

Praise the Lord with the lyre; make melody to [God] with the harp of ten strings. Sing to [the Lord] a new song; play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts. For the word of the Lord is upright, and all [God's] work is done in faithfulness. [God] loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord.

- Psalms 33:2-5

Voice of the Day: Henry David Thoreau

by Administrator 01-18-2007

We can never have enough of nature. We must be refreshed by the sight of inexhaustible vigor, vast and titanic features, the sea-coast with its wrecks, the wilderness with its living and its decaying trees, the thunder cloud, and the rain which lasts three weeks and produces freshets. We need to witness our own limits transgressed, and some life pasturing freely where we never wander.

Verse of the Day: "The Grace of God"

by Administrator 01-17-2007

We want you to know, brothers and sisters, about the grace of God that has been granted to the churches of Macedonia; for during a severe ordeal of affliction, their abundant joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. For, as I can testify, they voluntarily gave according to their means, and even beyond their means, begging us earnestly for the privilege of sharing in this ministry to the saints.

The word for peace in both Arabic (salam) and Hebrew (shalom) has the same etymological root and the same breadth of meaning: wholeness, health, safety, and security. It refers to a peace experienced and lived out in the everyday historical situation of life. Peace can be a basis or cause that leads to something else. It is either a prerequisite or a by-product.

Verse of the Day: Seeking God

by Administrator 01-16-2007

As for me, I would seek God, and to God I would commit my cause. [God] does great things and unsearchable, marvelous things without number. [God] gives rain on the earth and sends waters on the fields; [and] sets on high those who are lowly, and those who mourn are lifted to safety.

Voice of the Day: Sue Monk Kidd

by Administrator 01-11-2007

Ultimately, we are reborn to love because in this expanding, gracious space within us, we arrive at the astonishing presence of God at the core of our life. We blunder into the heart of God and find our own.

by Administrator 01-10-2007

Active duty service members are saying no to Bush's proposed escalation of the war in Iraq. On January 16, to commemorate Martin Luther King day, messages are being delivered to Congress from more than 1,000 active duty and Guard and Reserve service members who are opposed to the war in Iraq and have signed the

We need to measure our world and the imperative for peacemaking, with an eye to justice. Whatever is unjust threatens peace. Whatever fosters justice is an act of peacemaking.

Verse of the Day: "Love Your Enemies"

by Administrator 01-10-2007

But I say to you that listen, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again.

Verse of the Day: Neighbors in Need

by Administrator 01-09-2007

If there is among you anyone in need ... do not be hard-hearted or tight-fisted toward your needy neighbor. You should rather open your hand, willingly lending enough to meet the need, whatever it may be.

Voice of the Day: Monika K. Hellwig

by Administrator 01-09-2007

What made the teaching of Jesus different and apparently so hard to accept then as now, was that it required a critical reassessment of the structures and values and attitudes of human society as his listeners and followers shared in it.
