Readers Speak Out on Body Image and Faith

By Elizabeth Palmberg 4-08-2009

Many thanks to the folks who answered our request for your thoughts and stories about eating and body image in our culture! Below, read G., a 42-year-old mother, reflect on the journey that has brought her to healing; hear P., a college student, express her fears and struggles; and read J., a dietician who is recovering from anorexia, ponder how anxiety about eating harms our spiritual walks. We were also blessed with spiritually grounded thoughts from "Monica," a twentysomething woman quoted in Body Language; from Rebekah Wagner, who leads a support group for women with eating disorders; and from Sojo blogger and author Onleilove Alston.

On this topic, there are often as many questions as answers -- we encourage you to keep building community and praying together! (For tips on responding to folks in need of immediate help for an eating disorder, check out Nicole Saylor's blog entry What to Do If Someone at Your Church Has an Eating Disorder, and the resources at the National Eating Disorders Association.)
