Now, this may come as a great disappointment to a few Tim Tebow fans out there, but apparently the star quarterback of the Denver Broncos will not, we repeat, will NOT be stripping down to his skivvies for one of those famous (or infamous, depending on your tastes) Jockey underwear ads.
Tebow is the new spokesman for Jockey. But unlike '70s baseball heartthrob Jim Palmer (the relatively hirsute gentleman in the white Jockey briefs to the lower right) or soccer god (and father of four) David Beckham in his smoldering Emporio Armani spreads, the quarterback known as much for his Christian faith as his agility on the grid iron will not be posing in his underwear for the, well, underwear company.
NBNR reports:
"Some things are better when left to the imagination," Mo Moorman, public relations director for Jockey International, told me.
An underwear-clad Tebow was briefly displayed on the company's website, but has since been replaced with an image of the Denver Broncos player fully clothed. But even with his pants on, the quarterback has been a "lightning rod" for the brand, driving up sales, according to Chief Marketing Officer Dustin Cohn.
"Tebow should have dropped his pants," Kleinmann told Huffington Post's NBNR. "I don't know why everyone is so scared of men in underwear. Choosing a guy that people can relate to -- a man's man -- is good, but even he walks around his house in his underwear... People just need to relax and stop being afraid."
While I can't speak for all Americans, I can say with certainty that I'm not afraid of a man in his underpants. But I'm also quite sure I don't need to see the vast majority of men in their drawers. There are myriad reasons for this, not the least of which is a stubborn nod to modesty if not basic esthetics.
How refreshing for a young, handsome, athletic, single man to choose not to show us everything he's got. Tebow is many things and one of them is would seem to be an old-fashioned (in the best sense) gentleman.
Good for him.
Whether it's a matter of faith, common decency or just good manners, Tebow's choice not to disrobe for Jockey isn't a reason for anyone else to get his (or her) undies in a bundle.
You can see a fully-clad Tebow in a new ad for Jockey below. (Did you know Jockey uses the same technology to keep their customers dry and cool that NASA employs to make sure its astronauts are comfortable? Sheesh. Learn something new every day.)
