The Justice Coalition of Henderson

Thank you to all

summit attendees

The Justice Coalition of Henderson extends a sincere thank-you to all who participated in the Summit on Race, Poverty and Inequality at the Henderson Fine Arts Center on Oct. 24. The Summit was presented through the generosity of the Preston Family Foundation and sponsored by the Christian Church of Kentucky, First Christian Church of Henderson, Zion United Church of Christ and Coalition members. Gratitude is also due to the Justice Jam Band, the Henderson Fine Arts Center staff, Henderson County Schools, The Gleaner, WSON, Abba Promotions and the following leaders who engendered the success of this community dialogue through their gifts of time, talent and sensitivity for justice.

Lisa Sharon Harper (Sojourners) delivered the keynote address and led a breakout group on criminal justice reform. Carla Wallace (Louisville Standing Up for Racial Justice) led a group on how to organize for action. Henderson's own Rev. Wayne Burt (Bennett Memorial Methodist Church) led another group in rethinking poverty.

We were proud to exhibit the work of 14 students from North and South Middle Schools expressing through various media their Challenge Day theme: "Be the Change You Wish to See in the World." On stage the students were awarded medals and recognized for their work.

Many thanks go to Gleaner Editor Tom Lovett, who moderated the panel discussion on race and poverty issues. These community leaders comprised the panel: Steve Gold (County Attorney), Bill Dixon (HCC ), Marganna Stanley (HC Schools), Melissa Clements (United Way), Bobbie Jarrett (Housing Authority), Abraham Brown (Holy Name Latino Leader), Brad Schneider (Kyndle) and Major David Piller (Henderson Police Department).

Monday is the day of the next Coalition meeting. All who are interested in working for justice are invited to meet with us at 5 p.m. at the Housing Authority, 111 South Adams.

This letter was signed by Bob Coons, Glenda Guess, Joan Hoffman, Kenneth Johnson and Phyllis Ward, representing the Justice Coalition of Henderson.
