WASHINGTON, DC - Rev. Adam Russell Taylor of Sojourners calls for all Christians across the political spectrum to denounce white supremacy, and to condemn President Trump's failure to denounce it during last night's first presidential debate:

"Last night’s presidential debate reached a new, disgraceful low due to President Donald Trump’s constant insults, falsehoods, interruptions, and bullying, which made it impossible for real, substantive issues to be addressed. What was even more alarming was the president’s refusal to condemn white supremacists, including the SPLC designated hate group the Proud Boys, who the president ominously said should “stand back and stand by.” This is dangerous and unacceptable. Equally egregious was the president’s continued efforts to sow doubt and chaos into the election, alleging without evidence widespread fraud tied to mail-in ballots and refusing to commit to a peaceful transfer of power. Regardless of how we as Christians lean politically, or how we ultimately decide to vote, we must all be united and show greater courage in unequivocally and publicly condemning the president’s refusal to reject white supremacists and embrace a peaceful transfer of power. Our belief in and commitment to affirming imago dei, that all people are made in the image and likeness of God, and the very future American democracy are at stake. "
