Pathway to Immigration is a Moral Imperative

Statement from Sojourners President Adam Russell Taylor

“On Friday we marked the anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution. On Monday we see another example of how “We the People” still doesn’t include all the people. It doesn’t include the undocumented farmworkers who kept harvesting food to make sure our families are fed. It doesn’t include the immigrants with TPS and DACA who are COVID frontline workers helping to keep our families alive. It doesn’t include the caregivers who watch over our families daily.

As people of faith, we call on our leaders to remember that every person is made in the image of God. That every person should be treated as a reflection of God. That every person deserves dignity and the chance at a better life.

It’s time for Congress to formally recognize undocumented immigrants as the Americans they already are. It’s time for “We the People” to include all of us. It’s good for the economy, for our communities, and fulfills our faithful promise to love one another.

Today’s Senate parliamentarian ruling is disappointing, but it’s just a setback. We will continue to work tirelessly with Members of Congress to ensure that millions of undocumented immigrants can have lasting protections.”
