In this month’s Sojourner magazine, its editor, Jim Wallis, wrote of the unfinished agenda of racism. He wrote, “This historically horrendous evil existed because we tolerated it. That’s why evil always continues to exist: because we tolerate it.”
As I read that sentence, I was struck with the contrasting sentence of Margaret Mead: “Never believe that a few caring people can't change the world. For, indeed, that's all who ever have.”
As we begin the New Year with our soon-to-be-forgotten resolutions of exercise and diet, might we consider a deeper resolution of movement from apathy to compassion? For those already immersed in compassionate behavior, perhaps our call is one of invitation to another person to join us. After all, is that not what Jesus did: “Come and see” (John 1:45-46). This was said in response to Phillip’s confronting question “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?”
