Yesterday, nearly 200 of the nation’s most prominent faith leaders signed a statement embracing peacemaking over war in Iran. Rev. Jim Wallis, alongside other leaders, held a press conference on Capitol Hill to underscore their mission of peace. They came to a clear conclusion: opposing war is not enough; we must simultaneously create peace.
These leaders were not alone. By 10:00 AM the following day, over 1600 people had added their name to the letter. Read the speakers’ words below:

“Today and tomorrow, military confrontation with Iran is not the answer. We call for a different way, a better way,” said Reverend Jim Wallis, President and Founder of Sojourners. “We must commit to being innovators of peace, to calling on our religious leaders, theologians, clergy, and laypersons to speak out against war.”

“We are called to love our neighbor without exception. This love is not restricted to American neighbors or Christian neighbors. This love extends, without bounds, to every person on God’s earth,” said Jim Winkler, President and General Secretary of the National Council of Churches.

“We urge our political leaders today to learn from our past failures, to learn that war costs lives,” said Dr. Barbara Williams-Skinner, CEO and co-founder of Skinner Leadership Institute. “The only winner in this war will be the military industrial complex.”
