Sterling was shot in Baton Rouge, La., as he was selling CDs outside a convenient store. Police arrived after a resident reported being threatened outside of the store. Police found Sterling inside the store and claimed he was trying to pull a loaded gun from his pocket when one of the officers opened fire. The encounter lasted about 90 seconds.
While much of America over the past week was focused on Trump vs. Hillary or Ryan Lochte and crew in Brazil, south Louisiana was drowning, almost unnoticed, from severe floods. But local churches sprang into action and became places of refuge with resources to share as those who could help others did.
The ambush came on the heels of the Dallas shooting, when five officers were killed during a protest against police violence. Baton Rouge was the city where police killed Alton Sterling on July 5.
