On August 12th at 1 pm ET, join Sojourners for a timely conversation with Bishop Mariann Budde on what it means to be brave in moments that call for moral clarity. Drawing from her recent book, How We Learn to Be Brave: Decisive Moments in Life and Faith, Bishop Budde will explore how individuals and communities of faith can speak truth, act with integrity, and remain grounded when confronting injustice in the public square. The conversation will be moderated by Rev. Adam Russell Taylor, president of Sojourners and author of A More Perfect Union: A New Vision for Building the Beloved Community.
At a time of deep polarization, widespread distrust, and growing pressure to retreat into silence or certainty, many of us are asking what faithful courage looks like. Bravery does not always mean acting without fear or having the perfect words. Often, it begins with recognizing the moment before us and choosing to respond with honesty, compassion, and conviction.
People of faith are called neither to withdraw from public life nor to mirror its anger and division. We are called instead to ask deeper questions: When is it time to speak? What truths are we being asked to name? How do we confront injustice without losing our humility, hope, or love for our neighbors? And how can our communities help sustain us when courage feels costly?
Rather than treating bravery as a quality reserved for a select few, this conversation will consider how courage can be cultivated through faithful practice, honest reflection, and life in community. Together, we will explore what it means to speak truth to power, remain rooted in the way of Jesus, and take meaningful action for justice, peace, and the common good.
