Afternoon Links of Awesomeness: Food Edition

Apples
Ok, well, Apple (singular) to be more precise. Ever wondered what Steve Jobs' favorite gelato flavor might be? Yeah, us neither. But someone went undercover for this Food Informant diary on the extraordinary culinary options at Caffe Macs the official cafeteria at the computer giant's Cupertino, Calif., campus.

Bamanna Bread

Keith Green's legendary song "So You Wanna Go Back To Egypt" contains a litany of various uses for manna, including bamanna bread, manna burgers, flaming manna souffle, manna waffles, filet of manna, mannacotti and of course, manna bagels.

Coffee
Cars can run on some interesting material: vegetable oil, wood, even whiskey, but this java rocket recently broke the current record for cars running on organic waste, with a speed of 77.5 mph.

Garlic
Peel a head of garlic in 10 seconds or less. Watch below or visit the Saveur Test Kitchen for further guidance.

Hot Sauce
Have a religious experience the next time you reach for a bottle of the hot stuff to spice up your scrambled eggs, pizza or gumbo. The Apocalypse is the hot pepper sauce made by a company called Religious Experience. They also make a line of salsa called The Wrath.

Ice Cream
A man wearing an ice cream cone costume in Ocala, Florida was mistaken for protesting KKK member. Needless to say, he didn't attract much business, but instead frightened many locals.

Pancakes
FLAP-JACK FLOOR PILLOWS
look "good enough to eat and comfortable enough to sit on."

Pie
Half cherry pie, half blueberry. Half bacon spinach quiche, half Dutch caramel apple? Maybe not that last one, but with this split decision pie pan, you'll never have to decide between which delicious pie to make.

Unorthodox Toasters (and other kitchen gadget FAILS)
From the fine folks at LIFE
: "In an age when a raucous juggernaut of TV shows, books, websites, blogs, magazines, and "star chefs" have turned cooking into a just another unappetizing, high-stakes competition -- rather than celebrating it as one of life's elemental pleasures -- it's gratifying to occasionally slow down, take a breath, and recall some of the clever devices that, over the years, have quietly furthered the culinary arts ... or at least tried to." Wine

Cana's Feast is a vineyard in Oregon founded by evangelical Christians. That's right. You heard us. Evangelicals typically have a rather fraught relationship with wine and alcohol in general. (Read the 1977 TIME magazine story asking "Did Jesus Drink Wine?" HERE.) Cana's Feast Founder Gino Cuneo left the winery a few years back and is the winemaker for Tre Nova in Oregon, but Cana's Feast remains. And Gino's story of losing (or getting pushed out) of his original winery, in part by his Christian business partners, is a fascinating, ultimately enlivening tale of loss, redemption and grace. In the video below, Cuneo talks a bit about winemaking. You can read Portland Monthly Magazine's stellar profile of Cuneo and his adventures in wine and faith, HERE.
