Good Shipping News

Harbor City Services Inc. is a Baltimore-based warehouse business and moving company that makes jobs available for people with psychiatric disabilities. "We sell and broker used medical equipment," founder John D. Herron told the UM Connection. Herron's company, started in 1987, employs 50 people, provides excellent customer service, and turns a profit. This winning combination garnered Harbor City the 2002 Social Enterprise Alliance award for organizations that leverage their assets to create business revenue for social initiatives.

The innovation, however, doesn't stop there. Harbor City has added a separate division for providing medical equipment to ministries in Africa. "We found that we could be a collection site and a small moving service," said Herron. "We pick up and store small items at different locations until [a particular group] has a container fully loaded and ready it for shipping at a reasonable price." The new niche creates additional jobs for the community. "Now it's a business with a social mission."
