Meet Our Sustainers
“Sojourners helps to remind me every day of my values. I am a member of the Sustainers Circle because I believe so passionately in the work and mission of Sojourners. In it I find hope – and a way to put into practice my firm belief that we have to come together to do a much better job of taking care of each other and our communities.” - Sheryl Smith, Michigan
“Sojourners’ message brings people together through God without the boundaries of denominations. I joined the Sojourners Sustainers Circle to strengthen Sojourners so it may have a broader impact worldwide.” - Rev. Edward Amimo, Kenya
As a member of Sojourners Stewardship Community, your faithful gifts enable us to share our vision for the future and ensure that this community remains strong, sustainable, and continues to reach more people and places of influence. This community helps us sustain a significant portion of our $5 million annual budget.
Our levels of giving include:
- Change Makers (giving between $1,000-$5,000 annually)
- Movement Builders (giving between $5,000-$20,000 annually)
- Founder’s Circle (giving at $20,000 or more annually): This is the most intimate group of the Stewardship Community and it’s members are critical leaders in the social justice movement, sustaining Sojourners’ core values with their visionary support. Learn more about the Founder’s Circle here.
Your Gift In Action (these are a few examples of what your giving at these levels can accomplish):
- $2,200 covers the cost to support one Fellow in Sojourners’ Year Long Fellowship program for a month ($26,000 for the full year).
- $5,000 estimated cost to coordinate and host a Voter Protection/Education event in a key city.
- $10-$15,000 is the average cost to create story-telling videos that go viral and reach millions online, like Reclaiming Jesus and 7 Reasons Men Shouldn’t Be Pastors.
- $24,000 allows us to provide every member of Congress and each Governor’s office in the US a 1 year subscription to Sojourners magazine.

A few of the most common ways to join the Legacy Circle:
Wills and Bequests
YOUR WILL is the cornerstone of your estate plan, whether you’re wealthy or not. It’s also the most popular way to leave a legacy with Sojourners. Many of your fellow Sojourners choose this simple, flexible, and versatile way to ensure we can continue our work for years to come. This type of gift is known as a Charitable Bequest.
To leave a gift in your will, simply share this sentence with your attorney or financial planner:
“I bequeath $ ______ or ______% of my estate to Sojourners."
408 C Street, NE, Washington, DC 20002
You can add Sojourners to your existing will by revising and re-executing the document at any time, or my executing a separate amendment called a codicil.
Retirement Assets are not normally part of a will. Did you know that the average estate loses up to 50 percent of retirement assets to taxes? So, make sure you don’t fund the next war or injustice. Find more information here.
Retirement Savings form a significant part of working Americans’ assets. They include:
- Individual retirement accounts (IRAs), 401 (k) or 403 (b) plans;
- Private pension plans;
- State, local, and federal government pension plans;
- Certain taxable money for earmarked for retirement, such as stock you inherited from a deceased relative.
Simply add the following beneficiary:

A gift of a portion of a life insurance can truly save a life through Sojourners. Sojourners embraces your desire to save lives and speak up for others when you cannot. We agree to do that for you.

A donation of appreciated stock, mutual funds, bonds, or other appreciated assets is an effective way to maximize your charitable gift while minimizing the tax burden on your estate and eliminating capital gains tax. You can deduct the full fair market value of your appreciated securities (if owned more than one year) and you save again by avoiding all capital gains taxes. For more information, download this PDF.
Charitable Remainder Trusts
A charitable remainder trust can provide life income for you (and your spouse) and distribute the remainder to a charity, such as Sojourners. A charitable remainder trust is similar to a gift annuity, but more complex and typically funded by appreciated assets. The most common charitable remainder trusts are the charitable remainder unitrust and the charitable remainder annuity trust. Please contact us to discuss charitable remainder trusts or request more information.
A charitable gift annuity is a gift that will provide you and/or your spouse with guaranteed fixed income for life and then later support the mission of Sojourners. Charitable gift annuities provide an immediate income tax deduction for a sizable portion of the gift. In addition, a large percentage of the fixed payments are tax-free in most cases. Charitable gift annuities to Sojourners are normally funded with cash or appreciated assets valued at $10,000 or more. If desired, the fixed payments of a charitable gift annuity can also be deferred. Charitable gift annuity rates are determined annually by the American Council on Gift Annuities. Rates depend on your age and/or your spouses’ age at the time when you make the gift; rates increase when you choose to defer your payment for one year or more. Visit http://www.pgdc.com/calculation-center to find current annuity rates based on your age or ages and the size of your gift.
Did you know that you can designate Sojourners as the recipient of your automatic payroll deductions? If you’re a federal or state employee, you can support Sojourners through the Combined Federal Campaign by using Sojourners’ identification code #12191. Also, check with your local United Way campaign, or your company’s human resources department for more information on how you can support Sojourners with your paycheck.

Giving Securities or Gifts of Cash by Wire Transfer
When you give a gift of appreciated securities to Sojourners, a 501(c)(3) organization, you can avoid the capital gains tax on those securities and also receive an immediate charitable income tax deduction. It is important that you have owned the stock or securities for one year or more, and that you donate the securities themselves (not the proceeds from the sale of the securities). Making a transfer of securities, or a cash transfer to Sojourners is easy. Please click here to download our instructions along with a sample letter to your broker. Please contact Kaitlin Hasseler by phone at 202-745-4610, or by email at email@example.com if you have further questions.
Memorial giving is a meaningful way to recognize significant life events and people while supporting Sojourners. Your gift will be instrumental in building a deeply rooted Christian movement that is strong enough to effect social change and sustain people over the long haul. We will notify your honoree or their family of your gift with a special card. A separate acknowledgement will be mailed to you, which you can keep for your tax records. Click here to give.
